Woodward Dream Cruise Sees Thousands of Fans Before Feeling a Thunderous Disruption

The event started out perfectly as many have been anticipating the Woodward Dream Cruise. With a big storm causing big problems, the official cruise day was almost completely disrupted. Almost.
DETROIT, M.I. - Woodward Dream Cruise can bring millions of visitors from all over the world for the third Saturday in August as hundreds of classic, muscle, street rods, custom, collector and special interest cars cruise the famous Woodward Avenue. The MI Auto Times team was front and center as the yearly event began as there was plenty to see and experience as the days continued up to the official cruise day.
This year started off no different than any other with anywhere from 750,000 to 1.7 million spectators turning out for the 2011, 17th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise. The pre-festivities beginning on Friday with the main event--the Cruise--scheduled to start Saturday at 4 p.m.
The only difference for this year was a torrential, thunderous storm that hit the metro Detroit area during the Woodward Dream Cruise.
The worst of the storm caused high winds that downed trees and power lines, which left 60,000 people without power on Saturday and about 12,000 left without power on Sunday.
Although the severe portion of the storm only lasted about a minute and a half, according to spectators like Bill Campbell, whose house is about 20 minutes from where the Woodward Dream Cruise starts, it hit hard enough to cause a temporary disruption to the festivities and make one person seeking shelter from the downpour at a Chipotle restaurant said, "Woodward Dream Cruise? More like Woodward Nightmare."
The Cruise started at 4 p.m. but had its first diversion at 5 p.m. as the chance of rain hit 100 percent, according to local weather forecasts.
The skies cleared Saturday night, but Royal Oak Police began telling spectators to leave at 8 p.m., an hour earlier than the scheduled plan. Many left, but many stayed, and could be seen and heard opening up the throttle, taking advantage of the open road near Maple Road in Birmingham.
MI Auto Times has a lot of footage and great content to put together and post for all Woodward Dream Cruise fans to see. Check back as we work to bring everyone what we had fun experiencing.
